To use a lightweight wheelchair, first, unfold the chair by pushing down on the seat rails or lifting the handles until it locks into place. Then, adjust the footrests, armrests, and seat to a comfortable position for the user, and engage the brakes for safe transfers. To self-propel, push the large handrims on the drive wheels, pulling them backward to move back and pushing forward to move forward. For transport or pushing, a caregiver can use the rear handles.
Setting Up and Adjusting
1. Unfold the chair:
Find the seat fabric, place your hands on each side over the seat rails, and firmly push down and apart to expand the chair until the cross braces lock into place.
2. Adjust components:
Customize the armrests, leg rests, seat width, and seat height to ensure the user's comfort and proper support.
3. Secure the footrests:
Position the footrests out of the way for transfers, and flip them up or down as needed.
4. Engage the brakes:
Before transferring in or out of the chair, ensure the brakes are locked for safety.
Operating the Wheelchair
1. Self-Propelling:
Forward movement: Grasp the large handrims on the back wheels and push them forward with smooth, continuous motions.
Backward movement: Pull the handrims backward to propel the chair in reverse.
Turning: To turn, hold one handrim still while pushing the other forward.
2. Using Attendant Controls:
Pushing: A caregiver can push the chair from behind using the rear handles.
Stopping: Engage the hand brakes on the rear handles for slowing down or a complete stop.
Safety Considerations
Anti-tippers: If your chair has anti-tippers, make sure they are properly engaged to prevent the chair from tipping backward, especially on inclines or ramps.
Curb navigation: When going up or down curbs, approach them square on and use a technique like wheelieing to lift the front wheels.
Brake check: Always check that the brakes are locked when the wheelchair is stationary.
Folding for Transport
Fold the footrests: Flip the footrests up to a vertical position.
Fold the chair: Grasp the seat fabric in the center and pull upward to fold the chair.
Carry it: Use the built-in handle to carry the folded wheelchair for storage or transport.
