Who Uses Them

Commode chairs are designed for individuals who: Are elderly with limited mobility, Have disabilities that make reaching the bathroom difficult, Are recovering from illness or surgery, and Need assistance with toileting.

To use a commode chair, adjust it to the correct height so the user's feet are flat on the floor and knees are level with hips, then place it on a stable surface or lock its wheels. Assist the person to back up and sit down slowly, holding both armrests for stability. To stand, have them push up with their legs and arms, and after they are standing, move the commode for cleaning or use it over a standard toilet.

1. Setting Up the Commode

Adjust the height:

Sit down on the commode and measure from the back of your knee to the floor; add a couple of inches to this measurement for the ideal commode seat height.

Ensure stability:

Place the commode on a stable surface or against a wall to prevent movement. If it has wheels, lock them before use.

Position the bucket:

If using the commode at the bedside, insert the bucket and consider placing a disposable liner or a small amount of water with soap in it to make cleaning easier later.

2. Sitting on the Commode

Turn and position:

With the user's back to the commode, help them slowly turn and step back until they feel the commode against the back of their legs.

Sit down slowly:

Have the person reach back and hold onto both armrests. To avoid tipping, encourage them to place equal pressure on both arms as they lower themselves down.

3. Standing Up

Prepare to stand:

The person should place both feet flat on the floor.

Push up:

Using the armrests for support, have them push up with their legs and arms to stand.

Move to a walker (if applicable):

Once standing, have them take their hands off the commode and reach for their walker before starting to walk.

4. After Use

Hygiene:

Help the person to stand, and if they need help cleaning, use toilet paper and then wash with soap and water before gently towel drying.

Clean the bucket:

Remove the bucket and take it to the bathroom, then empty it into the toilet, clean it with a germ-killing cleanser and brush, rinse it, and return it to the commode.

5. Using as a Toilet Aid

Over the toilet:

You can remove the bucket and place the commode frame over a standard toilet.

Splash guard:

Place the splash guard in the commode to prevent waste from splashing on the floor.

Secure placement:

Line up the commode seat with the toilet seat. For a better fit, some commodes may require the removal o
