An Anti-decubitus Mattress, or pressure-reducing mattress, is a medical device designed to prevent and treat pressure sores (bedsores or pressure ulcers) by redistributing pressure on the body for individuals who are immobilized or have limited mobility. These mattresses achieve this through various mechanisms, such as alternating air chambers to continuously change pressure points or by using memory foam to conform to the body's shape and evenly distribute weight.

How it Works

Alternating Pressure: An electric pump inflates and deflates air cells in the mattress in a cycle, changing the points of pressure on the body. This process effectively "turns" the patient without manual repositioning, improving blood circulation and preventing the tissue damage associated with constant pressure.

Static Pressure Distribution: Some mattresses, particularly foam-based ones, use materials like memory foam that mold to the user's body heat and shape. This creates a larger surface area of contact, distributing pressure more evenly and reducing the load on any single point.

Key Benefits

Preventing and Treating Pressure Sores: By reducing prolonged pressure on specific areas, these mattresses help prevent the development of bedsores and can also aid in their treatment.

Improved Blood Circulation: The constant change in pressure promotes healthy blood flow to the skin and underlying tissues, reducing the risk of tissue damage.

Enhanced Comfort: The mattress helps alleviate pain and discomfort caused by prolonged lying by reducing pressure points.

Reduced Nursing Burden: For caregivers, the mattress can reduce the need for frequent manual repositioning of the patient.

Types of Anti-decubitus Mattresses

Air Mattresses: These typically consist of multiple air chambers that are alternately inflated and deflated by a quiet electric pump.

Foam Mattresses: Made from special high-density foam, these mattresses provide static pressure relief by contouring to the body.

Hybrid Mattresses: Some models combine air and foam elements for a comprehensive approach to pressure management.

To use an anti-decubitus mattress, place the mattress on the bed, connect the pump, and plug it in. Then, inflate the mattress to the recommended pressure for the patient's weight. Finally, turn on the pump and ensure it runs continuously, monitoring the pressure and air leaks to maintain proper function.

Preparation and Setup

Position the mattress: Lay the mattress flat on the bed frame, on top of the existing mattress.

Secure the mattress: Tuck the mattress's extension flaps under the existing mattress to keep it from moving.

Connect the pump: Attach the air hoses from the mattress to the pump, ensuring they are not kinked or trapped.

Hang the pump: Use the pump's hook to hang it on the foot of the bed frame.

Inflation and Operation

Plug in and power on: Plug the pump into a power outlet and press the power button to start the inflation process.

Inflate: Allow the mattress to inflate for the recommended time (e.g., 15-40 minutes) to ensure it's fully functional.

Adjust pressure: Set the air pressure according to the patient's weight using the pump's dials or digital controls for optimal comfort and pressure relief.

Continuous operation: The pump must remain plugged in and switched on 24/7 while the mattress is in use.

Daily Use and Monitoring

Check operation: Regularly ensure the pump is running smoothly and that the mattress is alternating air pressure as intended.

Monitor for leaks: Check for any air leaks or kinks in the hoses to maintain consistent pressure and effectiveness.

Adjust as needed: Monitor the patient's comfort and adjust the pressure as necessary to maintain optimal support.
