A bath bench with armrests is a shower safety aid designed to help people, particularly the elderly and those with mobility issues, sit down and stand up more easily and safely in a bathtub or shower. The armrests provide support for stability while entering and exiting the shower chair, preventing falls. These benches are often height-adjustable for optimal user comfort and may have features like padded, water-resistant seats and non-slip feet for enhanced safety.

Key Features and Benefits:

Support and Stability:

Armrests give users a stable point to hold onto when sitting down or standing up, reducing the risk of falls.

Safety:

The benches are designed to increase safety in a slippery environment, providing a stable place to sit during bathing.

Comfort:

Many benches feature padded seats and armrests that are soft, warm to the touch, and do not absorb water.

Adjustable Height:

Users can customize the bench's height to fit their specific needs, ensuring comfort and proper positioning for transfers.

Non-Slip Design:

Features such as anti-skid feet or rubber matting on the chair's legs help prevent the bench from sliding on wet bathroom surfaces.

Ease of Use:

Many models offer easy, tool-free assembly and disassembly, making them practical for home use.

Who Benefits from a Bath Bench with Armrests?

Seniors: Provides support and stability to prevent falls during bathing.

Individuals with Limited Mobility: Aids those who find extensive movement painful or difficult.

People Recovering from Injury or Illness: Offers a secure place to rest during bathing, reducing physical strain.

Visually Impaired Individuals: Modern designs often use contrasting colors to help users more easily see the chair in their shower or bath.

How to use the Bath Bench?

To use a transfer bench, position its legs so two are inside the tub and two are outside, adjusting it to your knee height for safety. Sit on the bench, then scoot your bottom to the center before lifting your legs one by one over the tub edge and into the tub. To exit, reverse the process: swing your legs back out, stand using the bench or other supports, and ensure the floor is dry to prevent slips.

Setup

Position the Bench: Place the transfer bench so two legs are inside the tub and two are outside.

Adjust the Height: Adjust the leg height so the bench is approximately two inches above your knee height, ensuring a safe and comfortable transfer.

Ensure Stability: Make sure the bench is stable and secure before use.

Getting In

1. Approach the Bench:

Stand in front of the bench with the back of your knees touching the edge of the bench.

2. Sit Down:

Slowly lower yourself onto the bench, using the back or armrests for support.

3. Scoot and Turn:

Wiggle your bottom backward to the center of the bench and turn your body to face the showerhead.

4. Transfer Legs:

Carefully lift your legs, one by one, over the edge of the tub and into the tub. Keep your toes pointed up to help keep your legs straight, especially after hip surgery.

Bathing

Use a Handheld Shower: Attach a handheld shower hose to the bench.

Wash Safely: Use a long-handled sponge to wash your lower legs and back.

Avoid Bending: Do not bend or twist your surgical hip, and keep soap and sponges within easy reach to avoid straining.

Getting Out

Dry Off: Dry your body while still seated on the bench.

Swing Legs Over: Swing your legs out of the tub, one at a time, and onto the floor.

Stand Up: Use your arms to support yourself and push off the seat to stand up.

Clear the Area: Make sure the floor outside the tub is dry and clear to prevent slips.
