Duralumin crutches are walking aids made from duralumin, a strong, lightweight, and durable aluminum alloy that provides excellent strength-to-weight ratio, making them a preferred material for high-performance equipment like aircraft and bicycles. The use of duralumin in crutches offers superior strength compared to pure aluminum, supporting up to 308 lbs, and can be coated or anodized to prevent corrosion.

What is Duralumin?

Duralumin is a specific type of aluminum alloy that includes copper, magnesium, and manganese to create a material that is both lightweight and incredibly strong.

It was developed in the early 20th century and quickly became a popular material for applications requiring high strength and durability, such as aircraft frames and automotive components.

Benefits of Duralumin Crutches

Lightweight:

Like pure aluminum, duralumin is very light, which makes crutches easier to maneuver and reduces user fatigue.

High Strength and Durability:

The addition of other metals significantly increases duralumin's strength, making it much more robust than pure aluminum for heavy-duty applications.

High Strength-to-Weight Ratio:

This property is crucial for aerospace and sports equipment, as it allows for strong, reliable components that are not excessively heavy.

Considerations

Corrosion:

Duralumin is susceptible to corrosion, especially when exposed to moisture. Manufacturers often use protective coatings like paint or pure aluminum to combat this issue.

Applications:

Due to its properties, duralumin is ideal for high-performance crutches used by athletes and for long-term rehabilitation where durability and a lightweight design are essential.

How to use the Duralumin Crutches?

To use Duralumin crutches correctly, first ensure they are properly fitted with a two-inch gap between your armpit and the crutch top, and the handgrips level with your wrist. Support your weight on the handgrips, not your armpits, to avoid nerve damage. When walking, place the crutches a few inches in front and to the side of your body, then step with your injured leg first, followed by your good leg.

1. Proper Crutch Fit

Stand up straight: with low-heeled shoes on.

Position the crutches: at your sides.

Check the gap: between your armpit and the top of the crutch – there should be about a two-inch (two-finger width) space.

Adjust the handgrips: so that when you hang your arms down, your wrists are level with the grips.

Slightly bend your elbows: when holding the hand grips.

2. How to Walk with Crutches

Position the crutches: Place the crutches a few inches in front of your body and slightly out to the sides to prevent tripping.

Support your weight on your hands: Lean on the handgrips, not on your armpits, to avoid damaging nerves.

Take a step: Move the crutches forward, then take a step with your injured leg, followed by a step with your good leg.

Stay balanced: Keep your head up and look ahead, and maintain an upright posture.

3. Special Considerations

Stairs:

To go up, put the good leg first, then the crutches, then the injured leg. To go down, put the crutches down first, then the injured leg, then the good leg.

Sitting:

Back up to a chair until you feel it with your good leg, then move your crutches to the side, grip the handgrips, and slowly lower yourself into the chair.

Avoid hazards:

Stay away from wet or slippery surfaces and uneven ground to prevent falls.
